Serving Dinner to the Homeless
St. James has made a commitment to serve dinner to the homeless in Ocean Beach at the Episcopal Church Center five times in 2017-18. Volunteers are needed to set up, cook, serve and clean up each time from 4:30 to 7:00 pm. The first opportunity was on August 23.
Eight to ten volunteers are needed each time we provide meals. There is one menu so all those cooking will cook the same thing and we will transport the food to the ECC. You can volunteer to serve once or all five meals throughout the year.
Sherry Seymour is coordinating this ministry and can be reached via email, email@example.com, or cell phone 858-945-1807. Contact her as soon as possible and be part of serving those in need.
Loaves & Fishes
Members of the Pastoral Team are ready to deliver meals. At times of many life experiences — loss of a loved one, birth of a child, sickness or surgery — a home-cooked meal is just what is needed. We are calling the ministry of providing meals “Loaves & Fishes.”
The chest freezer in the hall between the kitchen and the chapel is available for storage.
You may email Maryl Weightman, firstname.lastname@example.org, or Pam Bandyk, email@example.com, if you have questions about meals or if you have a recipient to suggest.
Church and World Ministry
This ministry is dedicated to educating our parishioners on global affairs and to encouraging engagement with the community to build a better and more peaceful world.
This ministry is organic, responding to the Millennium Development Goals and grounded in Christ's summary of the Law: “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind and thy neighbor as thyself.”
Examples of Outreaches
Health Ministries Outreach; building houses for the poor in Mexico; mentoring youth in special schools; collecting books for literacy projects; raising funds for those affected by tragedies; supporting local and international projects to help the most vulnerable.
Outreach also includes The St. James Knitting Ministry, sponsored by the Seamen’s Church Institute, which knit caps and scarves for river and deep sea mariners. The White Elephant Sale is an annual fundraising project of parishioners and community members for both “outreach” and “in-reach” purposes.
