Thanksgiving is here and now it all begins. The bustling, the planning, the worrying, and the purchasing of presents. Yet Advent's true purpose is to get us ready for the Christ Child. It is supposed to be a time of mystery and quiet, but how many of us remember to do this purposeful readying? I know for me, there is so much to do that it is hard to remember to be quiet and get ready.
In Godly Play we ask the children to be ready, but in order for them to be ready the storyteller has to be ready first. The storyteller and door person should always ask themselves, "Am I truly ready?", "Are my body, heart, and spirit ready to be completely present today?", " Have the children been individually welcomed into the space?", "Am I keeping the covenant of rhythm that we have created here?" When the children get excited or won't sit still we have to say things like "We need to get ready again." and take a pause and give them the time they need before continuing.
My goal this Advent is to keep the covenant of the rhythm this year, and tell myself to get ready by taking small moments to be still and quiet and listen for the mystery that is advent. In so doing I hope to ready my children as well and to help them remember that not only is St. Nicholas on his way but so is the Christ Child and that is the great mystery. How will you get ready?
Peace be with you.
