Giving

At St. James by-the-Sea we believe that we are called to be good stewards of all that God has entrusted us with. Not only our financial resources, but our environment, our relationships, and our spiritual selves.

A Letter from the Rector

Dear Friends,

Our annual stewardship campaign kicked off this year on a date, which also happened to be my colleague Rebecca's birthday. This happy coincidence has led me to consider the points of comparison between stewardship and the giving of birthday presents. I googled the question, "Why do we give birthday presents to people?" And I got the following answer: "... to show that we are grateful for them, and that we value the role that they play in our lives."

Does this not go a long way to explaining why we might be part of a church stewardship campaign? We give to our church because we are grateful to God and for the role that God and his church play in our lives.

Our giving comes as a response to God's many gifts to us. Christian giving comes out of a place of gratitude. It is not motivated by guilt or coercion, but love. We give back to a God who loves us and has spared nothing in his giving to us.

It is in a spirit of love that I encourage you to be part of the stewardship campaign this year. Meeting our budget in these inflationary times will be a challenge, but, we are not aiming at a particular amount. Instead, the figure we are aiming at is of participating households. It is my firm belief that if 220 households respond positively to this letter, then we will meet what is required in our budget. So, I encourage you to give and invest in the exciting future of St James.

Your sincere friend and Rector,

The Rev’d Dr. Mark Hargreaves
Rector

Plate Offerings are an important source of income that the Parish relies on to support their programs and ministries.

Special gift appeals are made in circumstances where, for example, actual income does not meet budgeted amounts to fund a particular program or project; or where an unexpected need or opportunity presents itself.

We hope that in addition to your pledge, you will consider making plate offerings and special gifts either in response to an appeal or, if you are so moved, to initiate a special gift of your own!

Estate or Planned Gifts
We also hope that you will consider helping the church in preparing for the longer term. Our Legacy Society is designed to help people make prayerful estate plans. Would you consider including St. James by-the-Sea in your will? Do you have real property or other highly appreciated assets that you might leave to the church? There are many planned giving vehicles that can result in immediate tax benefits for you, benefit your family now or in the future, and benefit the church in amounts that you may not have thought possible. The last box you can check on the Pledge Card is to include St. James in your estate plans. We encourage you to check that box and contact the church office for more information about that option.
