"Search Committee" versus "Calling Committee ": In our early weeks, the names "calling committee" and "search committee" have been used interchangeably. Since, by canon law, our committee recommends candidates to our vestry, and the vestry is the body actually charged with "calling" (offering a job to) a candidate for the position of Rector, our committee is most accurately a "search committee" and we will refer to ourselves as such going forward. However, the phrase "calling committee" is a well-used term in the church, extending back many decades, and you will likely still hear us referred to as a "calling committee." Regardless of the name we are called by, our role in the process is ultimately to present the best possible candidates to the vestry, and not to actually offer the position to a candidate. That role properly resides with your elected vestry.
