Holy Week Reflection - Maundy Thursday

3/31/2021

0 Comments

Available at 6:00 am, Thursday, April 1.  Holy Week Schedule HERE.
1. Sing, my tongue, the glorious                       battle;
of the mighty conflict sing;
tell the triumph of the victim,
to his cross thy tribute bring.
Jesus Christ, the world's Redeemer
from that cross now reigns as King.

2. Thirty years among us dwelling,
his appointed time fulfilled,
born for this, he meets his passion,
this the Savior freely willed:
on the cross the Lamb is lifted,
where his precious blood is spilled.

3. He endures the nails, the spitting,
vinegar, and spear, and reed;
from that holy body broken
blood and water forth proceed:
earth, and stars, and sky, and ocean,
by that flood from stain are freed.
4. Faithful cross! above all other,
one and only noble tree!
None in foliage, none in blossom,
none in fruit thy peer may be:
sweetest wood and sweetest iron!
sweetest weight is hung on thee.

5. Bend thy boughs, O tree of glory!
Thy relaxing sinews bend;
for awhile the ancient rigor
that thy birth bestowed, suspend;
and the King of heavenly beauty
gently on thine arms extend.

6. Praise and honor to the Father,
praise and honor to the Son
praise and honor to the Spirit,
ever Three and ever One:
one in might and one in glory
while eternal ages run.
A note about Maundy Thursday from Fr. Mark:
“There will be a live Zoom ‘agape’ meal at 6:00 pm followed by a pre-recorded service of spiritual communion, with the choir, played on the Zoom meeting at 7:00 pm. Everyone is invited to join us. During the meal we will say some prayers for the day, hear some readings and eat together. All you need to do by way of preparation is to have a simple meal ready to go at 6:00 pm, with a glass of wine/grape juice and bread on hand. And you might also want to have a candle close by. This will be a good time of fellowship and a great way to prepare for the service which will follow straight afterwards on the same Zoom meeting HERE.

Holy Week Reflection - Wednesday

Available at 6:00 am, Wednesday, March 31.  Holy Week Schedule HERE.
1 Ah, holy Jesus, how hast thou offended,
that we to judge thee have in hate pretended?
By foes derided, by thine own rejected,
O most afflicted!

2 Who was the guilty? Who brought
             this upon thee?
Alas, my treason, Jesus, hath undone thee!
'Twas I, Lord Jesus, I it was denied thee;
I crucified thee.

3 Lo, the Good Shepherd for the sheep is offered;
the slave hath sinned, and the Son hath suffered.
For our atonement, while we nothing heeded,
God interceded.
4 For me, kind Jesus, was thy incarnation,
thy mortal sorrow, and thy life's oblation;
thy death of anguish and thy bitter passion,
for my salvation.

5 Therefore, kind Jesus, since I cannot pay thee,
I do adore thee, and will ever pray thee,
think on thy pity and thy love unswerving,
not my deserving.

Holy Week Reflection - Monday

Available at 6:00 am, Monday, March 29.  Holy Week Schedule HERE.
1.
Beneath the cross of Jesus
I fain would take my stand,
the shadow of a mighty rock
within a weary land,
A home within a wilderness,
a rest upon the way,
from the burning of the noontide heat
and the burden of the day.

2.
Upon that cross of Jesus
mine eyes at times can see
the very dying form of one
who suffered there for me;
and from my smitten heart with tears
two wonders I confess:
the wonders of redeeming love,
and my unworthiness.
3.
 I take, O cross, thy shadow
for my abiding place;
I ask no other sunshine than
the sunshine of his face;
content to let my pride go by,
to know no gain nor loss,
my sinful self my only shame,
my glory all the cross.

Sunday's Gospel contained the famous quote from John 3:16, "For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life." Here are several beautiful settings of that text as it has been set through the centuries.
