Morning Evening
Friday – John 21 vs 1-14
I’ve never been quite sure about John chapter 21. It doesn’t seem to fit at the end of the Gospel. The previous chapter records the Resurrection of Jesus and his appearing to the disciples – it seems to wrap the story up neatly and if there wasn’t another chapter after it, no one would have thought that it didn’t represent a perfectly adequate denouement to the story.
And yet, the Gospel carries on with Chapter 21. It starts with Peter announcing, “I am going fishing.” I read this now as an essential part of the story. It’s Peter and the disciples returning to “normal” life after experiencing the Resurrection. How could life ever be “normal” after that? A question which now faces us all.
In Christ,
Mark
