Matthew 5:17: "Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets; I have come not to abolish but to fulfil."
We are reminded in this passage that Jesus understood his mission and purpose as being completely in line with the Jewish faith and Scriptures. His teachings were understood as an interpretation of the spirit behind the "law and prophets" - not their abolition as some mistakenly (then as well as now) saw them. The corrective that Jesus brought - of moving people out of legalism and into the spirit and way of love - is just as important today for people of faith as it was then. "The letter kills, but the spirit gives life." When we start to fall into legalistic ways of being and thinking that supersedes the primary call to live according to what the spirit of love demands, we too will find ourselves being called out by Jesus and back to the path of love.
What can we do today to follow this call of love? How will Jesus' call to fulfill the "law and prophets," with love as our guide, inform our actions today? This week? This month?
Thanks be to God.
