Mother Rebecca has been part of the diocesan effort to provide spiritual care for the large contingent of immigrant girls being housed in the San Diego Convention Center. She reports that the work has been difficult but rewarding and that the Bishop has now hired a part time staff person to oversee this specific outreach in addition to a part time volunteer staff person to coordinate with all our interfaith partners. They are currently trying to recruit more chaplains to be on site and initiating efforts to collect money for care packages for the girls as they leave the convention center. See details below.
Supporting immigrant girls with lovingkindness and practical and spiritual support
The Episcopal Diocese of San Diego is happy to be helping to coordinate enrichment and spiritual care services for the unaccompanied migrant children arriving at the San Diego Convention Center. Jesus commanded us to love our neighbors as ourselves, and these are God's beloved children who will be our neighbors for a short time. Caring for them answers God's commandment to love others. The Episcopal Diocese of San Diego is working with its partners in other denominations and other faiths to bring comfort, worship, and prayers to these children. South Bay Community Services is coordinating the practical, social, emotional, and educational care for the 1,400+ migrant youth being housed at the San Diego Convention Center. They recently let us know that they have received an abundance of in-kind donations, and at this time monetary donations to purchase items for care packages would be most helpful. These are for the girls to take with them when they leave the shelter to travel to their new homes with family members or foster families. They include backpacks, clothes, school supplies, gift cards, cell phones, and more.
